How It All Started
Monica Metzdorf is a 53-year old Pediatric Urologist in Los Angeles. She is passionate about her work and devotes her time to helping make the lives of children better. Her young patients call her “Dr. Monica”.
When the COVID Pandemic started, Dr. Monica, like many of us, was feeling overwhelmed by the daily deluge of “Bad News” and was reminded of something “Scoop” Nisker used to say:
“If you don’t like the news … go out and make some of your own!”
—Wes (“Scoop”) Nisker – radio commentator on the San Francisco radio station KSAN in the late 60’s and 70’s, and later on KFOG.
The Plight of Zoos and Aquariums inspired Dr. Monica to take action:
On May 10, 2020 CBS Sunday Morning had a segment about zoos in the time of pandemic. San Diego Zoo is one of the zoos featured in the story which describes the challenge of feeding animals in the time of no income.

The COVID19 crisis and the resulting plight of the zoos gave her an idea to raise money for zoo and aquarium animals affected by the lockdowns: She set out on a solo walk of 130 miles across Southern California.
Her campaign dubbed “docwalks4animals” was a great success and has inspired the founding of this official nonprofit organization to continue her mission of raising awareness and funds for wildlife and environmental conservation projects.
She walked from the Los Angeles Zoo to the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach then on to the San Diego Safari Park in Escondido – a distance of 129. 1 miles.
Her urban trek took 8 days and she was able to raise almost $16,000 for hungry animals and fish.
